U.S. Senator Rand Paul (Ky.) addressed a session of the Kentucky State Senate this afternoon to discuss our nation's fiscal situation. Earlier in the day at the Senate State and Local Government Committee, he urged passage of SCR 134, a concurrent resolution calling on Congress to hold a convention for the sole purpose of amending the Constitution to require a balanced federal budget. The resolution passed the State Senate and will now be considered by the State House of Representatives.
"It is absolutely necessary, in order to get our nation's fiscal house in order, that we amend the Constitution to reflect the urgency of our financial crisis. Families around the country must do it, and even many state legislatures do it -- including the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It's time to hold Congress accountable to balance the federal budget and I will exhaust every avenue in ensuring its passage," Sen. Paul said prior to his floor remarks.
Joining Sen. Paul in marking the passage of this historic legislation were members of the State Legislature, including State Senate President David Williams, State Sen. Damon Thayer, and State Rep. Jim DeCesare.
"The Kentucky State Senate today spoke in unity with Senator Rand Paul in his effort to give our voice to the growing movement to amend the federal Constitution to require a balanced budget," Senate President Williams said.
"Sen. Paul campaigned on the idea of a balanced federal budget and the voters of Kentucky overwhelmingly approved," Sen. Thayer said. "It is imperative that we stop Washington's reckless deficit spending and restore the fiscal solvency of our country by taking steps that compels the federal government to act."
"With trillion-dollar deficits and a $14 trillion debt, our country faces a real fiscal emergency. It's past time that our federal government stops its reckless deficit spending and balances its budget," Rep. DeCesare said. "We need to use all tools at our disposal to get our fiscal house in order. A constitutional convention for the sole purpose of a balanced budget amendment is one way to accomplish this and I support taking steps to make it a reality."
