This week House Republicans made public their proposed spending cuts. While most people would agree that we must work to cut unnecessary fat from a budget stretching at the seams, the staggering breadth of social programs and unbelievable sums put forward show GOP leaders have one thing in mind: the expansion of Americans living in poverty. Leaders who find prenatal care, WIC, and Food Safety to be luxuries do not consider the best interests of their constituencies, nor America. How can we expect to recover from our current economic downturn with the possibility of $2 billion taken from job training, and $899 million from the development of renewable energy sources?* Americans need to get back to work, and our dependence on foreign oil hurts industry. We cannot allow unchecked tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to prevent our storied history of helping those less fortunate to take part in the American Dream.
