Congresswoman Laura Richardson's Statement on Proposed Budget Cuts from Republicans

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson (CA-37) released the following statement on Congressional Republicans' proposed budget and spending cuts:

"The number one priority for Democrats is creating jobs, strengthening the middle class and reducing the deficit. Thanks to recent policies we have enacted focusing on these goals, we have seen growth in our economy over the past several months.

"Here in Long Beach, transportation and infrastructure investment has been the key to creating jobs and moving our economy forward, yet Republicans want to cut these resources by $12 billion. This poorly conceived "slash and burn' domestic spending plan jeopardizes the progress we have made thus far and is not in the best interest of my district or our nation. Fiscal responsibility must be met with fiscal sustainability, but these budget cuts are neither, as they will cost millions of jobs, compromise our infrastructure and impede our ability to compete in the global market place.

"As Democrats continue to focus on getting Americans back to work and reducing the deficit, I call on my Republican colleagues to do the same and join us in creating solutions that are responsible, sustainable and in the best interest of the American people."
