In his recent State of the Union address, President Obama stressed the importance of science and innovation. Late last week, the Obama Administration demonstrated its resolve by announcing a $7 million investment in the Photovoltaic Solar Incubator Program, which will help boost the economy by creating jobs. San Jose based Solexant and Stion both received grants to develop more efficient thin-film photovoltaic cells as part of the program.
Unfortunately, this week my Republican colleagues announced that they are proposing cuts to the very programs that will help us create tomorrow's jobs, including renewable energy research. While it's clear that we need to address our nation's ballooning debt, many of the cuts my Republican colleagues are pushing will damage America's ability to compete globally and dig ourselves out of this recession. The proposed cuts to science and education programs will lead to our continued dependence on foreign energy sources and undermine our innovative edge. As a lifelong resident of Silicon Valley, I've seen firsthand the benefit that these programs have had on jobs and our economy.
I recently rejoined Science, Space, and Technology Committee, where I will continue fighting to foster innovation and job creation in Silicon Valley and throughout America.
Sincerely,
Zoe
