Upon hearing reports that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak may step down, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement:

"President Mubarak's departure could represent a major step toward a democratic future for the Egyptian people, which they richly deserve. However, that future depends on a peaceful and predictable transition to a more accountable form of government, so that the country does not collapse into chaos nor fall to extremists. I urge President Obama and Secretary Clinton to maintain a very close relationship with the Egyptian government, which has been a valued partner of the United States for many years, as well as with all our friends in the region who pray for peace."
