GOP Bill to Cut UN Funds is More Gimmicks

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the GOP's legislation to cut the United Nations Tax Equalization Fund:

"House Republicans have once again demonstrated that they are more worried about producing empty gimmicks to fulfill campaign promises than they are about tackling the serious fiscal issues facing our country. While it may appear that this bill is aimed at deficit reduction, the truth is that the CBO has estimated that implementing this bill "would have no effect on the federal budget.' This bill is clearly not a serious effort to reduce spending, create jobs, or put our fiscal house in order.

"Speaker Boehner has promised the American people that there will be an "adult conversation' regarding deficit and debt reduction, and this bill only makes a mockery of that promise. The American people deserve more than smoke and mirrors when it comes tackling the big issues facing our nation. It's time to stop playing "make believe' with the budget and get serious about putting people back to work and growing the economy."
