U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) released the following statement regarding President Obama's State of the Union address:
"While I welcome the President's pledge to veto any bills with earmarks, he missed an opportunity to present the American people with a comprehensive plan to put our country on a fiscally sustainable path. With our national debt having grown by more than $3 trillion since the President took office, his proposal to freeze spending after dramatically increasing it simply doesn't go far enough. Tomorrow I will join several of my new colleagues in introducing a measure to create a Balanced Budget Amendment, which will take a major step toward getting our nation's fiscal house in order.
"While a change in tone is welcome, President Obama needs to deliver a change in substance. I am hopeful that the President's focus on the economy and spending is backed by a genuine commitment to working across party lines for the good of our nation."
