Congressman Landry Named Vice Chair of Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee: Launches District Transportation & Infrastructure Assessment Tour

Congressman Jeff Landry (Republican, LA-03) has been appointed to three key Congressional subcommittees with broad oversight of national transportation and infrastructure issues and has been named Vice Chairman of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee.

U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (Republican, FL-07) also appointed Landry to the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment, and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials.

"We must do more with less and eliminate wasteful spending when it comes to rebuilding our nation's infrastructure and putting people back to work," said Chairman Mica. "Congressman Landry's experience as a public servant, small business owner and local economic development official in Louisiana make him a valuable addition to these subcommittees. His background will ensure that he is able to immediately contribute to the work of producing fiscally responsible legislation to improve our nation's infrastructure and create jobs."

Congressman Landry, a former member of the St. Martin Parish Economic Development Authority who has first-hand experience leveraging local resources to help create jobs in his community, was thankful the assignments: "I am grateful for the posts. Our district is the nation's leader in maritime jobs and the home to Port Fourchon, and it deserves the transpiration and infrastructure required to support our industries. I am fully committed to giving our residents a protected coast, good roads, and an efficient government."

"One of the expressed functions of Congressional power given by the Constitution is to regulate interstate commerce," said Landry. "We must find responsible ways to invest in our infrastructure so we may put Americans back to work and provide cost-competitive transportation options to our nation's small businesses."

Congressman Landry continued, "The people's work is my top priority. On the first day of Constituent Work Week, I am excited to launch my "District Transportation & Infrastructure Assessment Tour.' This tour will enable the residents of Louisiana's Coast to provide their valuable input on the needs of our district."

The first leg of the Tour includes the following stops: The Port of Iberia, The Port of Morgan City, The Terrebonne Levee District, and Port Fourchon.

The Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation has jurisdiction over the United States Coast Guard and the nation's shipping laws, including the regulation of ocean shipping by the Federal Maritime Commission. The Coast Guard is responsible for enforcing U.S. laws on domestic waterways, off our coasts, and on the high seas. The service's missions include search and rescue, illegal drug and migrant interdiction, oil spill prevention and response, marine safety, maintaining aids to navigation, enforcement of fisheries laws, defense readiness and maritime homeland security. As Vice Chairman, Landry will play a particularly active role in the Subcommittee's work, and be called upon to fulfill the chairman's duties as necessary.

The Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment has jurisdiction over clean water infrastructure; water resources developmentfor navigation, flood protection, and ecosystem restoration;water pollution control; and hazardous waste cleanup. The Subcommittee also conducts oversight of the federal regulation of clean water. Agencies that fall within the Subcommittee's jurisdiction include the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials has jurisdiction over the economic and safety regulation of railroads and the agencies that administer those regulations. The Subcommittee also oversees federal passenger rail programs and Amtrak. The transportation of hazardous materials and pipeline safety also fall under the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee.
