Tea Party Convenes

Today, Senators Rand Paul (Ky.), Mike Lee (Utah), and Jim DeMint (S.C.) held the first meeting of the Senate Tea Party Caucus. They were joined by Senators Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Jerry Moran (Kan.), who also joined to speak at the meeting alongside various grassroots Tea Party leaders.

The Senators discussed spending proposals, balancing the budget, bringing an end to the nation's deficit, and limiting the size of the federal government. Those in the audience were given an opportunity to voice their concerns about what's happening in Washington and offered questions to Senators Lee and Paul, and other members of the panel.

"This event was a great opportunity to let the grassroots folks who helped us get elected know that we are here to follow through on the commitments we made while campaigning," Sen. Paul said, following today's event. "To fight for a balanced budget, end this out-of-control spending, and get big government out of our lives -- this is what we said we'd do when we got here, and that is what we're doing."

The caucus plans to continue holding meetings on a regular basis, and intends to keep an invitation open to all who wish to join.
