Congressman Polis' Statement on President Obama's State of the Union Address

Statement

After sitting with the Democratic and Republican members of Colorado's Congressional Delegation to reinforce bipartisan unity, Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) issued the following response to President Obama's State of the Union address.

"Education reform is the cornerstone of my policy agenda, both in Colorado and in Congress. As a Coloradan, I am proud that President Obama highlighted Bruce Randolph in Denver and our state's success in education reform, which we hope to replicate across the state and nation. I am also thrilled that the president focused on critical areas of education reform, particularly the Race to the Top Program, and immigration reform and the DREAM Act.

The DREAM Act is not just an education issue; it's an economic issue and it's a competitiveness issue. As we work toward comprehensive immigration reform to finally fix our broken immigration system, the DREAM Act would help us retain the best and brightest to make our economy stronger and our nation more prosperous.

I also look forward to working with the President to expand Race to the Top and push for the bold reforms needed to create an excellent public education system that serves the needs of all children. From coast to coast, Race to the Top has been a catalyst for mobilizing communities and unleashing waves of meaningful school reform. It is essential that we keep moving forward to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed in life."
