Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement on the political situation in Egypt.

"Over the past few days, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians have taken to the streets to demand a new government that provides political freedom, greater economic opportunity, and equal justice under law. Demonstrators from every walk of life marched with their children, friends, and neighbors - uniting to demand democratic reform. In response, they were met with tear gas and police batons.

"As Egypt bravely navigates a transition to democracy, the United States should be on the side of the Egyptian people. For too long, we have been given a false choice between stability and freedom in the Arab world. Governments that respect human rights and give their people a voice in government are inherently more stable in the long run than those that rely on repression. The United States must be an ally to those who seek to be free."
