Issue Position

Trade is a fundamental component of our relationships with other nations and an integral part of today's complex global economy. It is a form of economic diplomacy that can break down barriers and enrich those who participate in it fairly. During a time of economic uncertainty, there is a tendency to want to pull back from global trade in the spirit of protecting American industry and workers. I believe America can compete on any fair playing field, and our efforts should be towards ensuring an honest system of trade with other nations.

There are consequences of trade that can affect certain industries and the hardworking Americans they employ. It is important that the Federal Government be cognizant and watchful of those consequences and do what is proper to address them. Just as we should not throw away our global trade agreements, we also cannot turn our backs on those who have lost their job because of them. I will continue to fight for American businesses and their employers so that our nation can benefit from the competition, new products, and new industries that can come from trade.
