The Constitution, The Senate & The Rule Of Law
"Our Constitution ensures that America will always be a nation ruled by laws, not by men. For more than 200 years, Americans have revered the wisdom and foresight of our nation's founding documents, and we must continue that proud tradition. What sets this nation apart in history is our conviction that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not merely American rights, confined to our shores, but the gifts of a benevolent Creator to all humanity."
-- U.S. Senator John Cornyn
Among Senator Cornyn's Accomplishments:
* Defending Your Personal Property Rights: Introduced bipartisan legislation to reverse the U.S. Supreme Court's controversial Kelo decision which ruled that a citizen's home could be taken by the government for purposes of economic development.
* Confirming Judges who Respect the Constitution: As a Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he helped to lead the fight to confirm Supreme Court Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito, as well as Texans such as Justices Priscilla Owen, Frank Montalvo, Xavier Rodriguez, Jane Boyle, and Grey Miller.
* Preserving Traditional Marriage: Co-sponsored the Federal Marriage Amendment in both the 108th and 109th Congresses which defends the institution of marriage as being between one man and one woman. As Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Property Rights, he held three hearings on the subject.
* Preventing the Desecration of the American Flag: Recognizing the importance of the United States flag to veterans and to all Americans, he was an original co-sponsor and lead advocate of the Constitutional Amendment to ban flag burning.
* Protecting Law Enforcement Officers & Judges: Sponsoring legislation to provide additional protection for judges, law enforcement officers and other courthouse officials from those who seek to do them harm.
* Affirming Police Officers Right-to-Carry: Co-sponsor and strong advocate of legislation that permits qualified current and retired law enforcement officers to carry a concealed firearm in any jurisdiction. The bill helps protect the American public, our Nation's law enforcement officers, and their families.
* Promoting Project Exile: Led the effort in the Senate to preserve funding for Project Exile, the federal version of the Texas Exile program, which he helped to advance as Attorney General of Texas.
