Congresswoman DeLauro believes that we need to be doing more to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and out of the lives of children. She supports legislation that would:

* Provide for a mandatory background check for purchases at gun shows * Re-enact the Assault Weapons Ban * Ban on the importation of large capacity ammunition clips * Requiring a child safety lock to be sold with every hand gun

In the past, Congresswoman DeLauro has supported legislation that banned assault weapons and established the Brady five-day waiting period for gun purchases. In just five years, the Brady Law has prevented 250,000 felons from purchasing firearms. She has also supported legislation that helped put 100,000 more police on America's streets to reduce violence.

These provisions will not infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens to purchase or use a gun, and they are reasonable actions to take to protect the entire community. DeLauro has helped win several battles in efforts to reduce violence and guns in communities. In the district, she joined police officials, sportsmen, and gun manufacturers in a public service program to distribute gun safety locks to Connecticut gun owners. "Project HomeSafe," a nationwide program sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), seeks to promote safe storage and handling of firearms through gun safety education and the distribution of free gun safety locks and literature.
