U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette consistently opposed the war in Iraq. She voted against the resolution authorizing the use of force that gave former President George W. Bush the ability to launch a unilateral attack on Iraq in 2003. U.S. Rep. DeGette spoke out from the beginning about the justification for a pre-emptive war in Iraq, and the dangerous mismanagement of the military by the Bush Administration every day since. For years the American people were not provided an adequate accounting for how billions of dollars were spent in their name. Money was wasted that should have been used to help rebuild Iraq and allow our troops to leave more quickly and in peace.

After several years of war, thousands of lives lost, and hard-fought gains made by our troops, President Barack Obama announced the end of combat operations in Iraq on August 31, 2010. The United States must still fulfill its commitment to support the Iraqi Security Forces and empower the Iraqi government to deliver adequate services to its people. Now it is time for the Iraqi citizens to find peace and stability for their country, and seize the opportunity afforded them through the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of our Armed Forces and the professionals that support their efforts.
