Issue Position: Foreign Policy

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Chair of the European Affairs Subcommittee, Senator Shaheen believes that the United States is strongest when we engage with the international community, when we join forces and share the burden with our allies, when we engage our enemies, and when we lead through the power of our ideals, not just the power of our military.

Today, the world is more interconnected than ever before, and our nation's economy and security are directly linked to events, markets and peoples across the globe. Many businesses in New Hampshire and throughout the U.S. rely on markets and consumers thousands of miles away. And as the attacks of September 11thso tragically illustrated, the United States is no longer secure from attacks planned halfway around the world by relying solely on our powerful military or the protection of our borders. The threats of the 21st century -- from terrorism and extremism to weapons of mass destruction, from climate change to failed states, from cyber attacks to disease -- are truly global and will require a commitment to working with our allies, partners, and even our competitors.

Our nation's foreign policy has a direct effect on the lives of every American, and Senator Shaheen is committed to making sure our policies are measured, intelligent, focused on maintaining America's long-term competitiveness and high moral standing, and based on the notion that our nation's leaders have the responsibility of leaving the world a better place for the next generation.
