Garrett Appointed to Key Budget Positions in the House

Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) today was appointed to two key budget positions in the House of Representatives during the 112th Congress.

Newly elected Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) announced that he would be appointing Garrett to serve another term on the Budget Committee as his leadership designee. Due to Republican Conference rules that prevent members from serving more than four terms on the Budget Committee, Garrett would have been term-limited from serving on the Budget Committee during the 112th Congress. With Boehner's appointment, Garrett will now be senior most member of the Budget Committee behind Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) who will serve as Chairman.

"Throughout his congressional career, Scott Garrett has worked to improve accountability and transparency in budget procedures to ensure that the federal government lives within its means," said Boehner after announcing Garrett as his leadership appointee to the Budget Committee. "I appointed Scott to serve another term on the Budget Committee because I know he has what it takes to stand up and fight for the American taxpayer and protect the Constitution."

In addition to his leadership appointment to the Budget Committee, Republican Study Committee (RSC) Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) announced the appointment of Garrett to serve as Chairman of the RSC Budget and Spending Task Force.

"It is a tremendous pleasure to announce that Rep. Scott Garrett will lead the Republican Study Committee's Budget and Spending Task Force," said RSC Chairman Jordan. "Scott fully understands and embraces the obligation we have to cut spending and get back on course to a budget that balances. I know he will work tirelessly to craft commonsense, conservative solutions to get this country back on firm fiscal ground."

Garrett issued the following statement on the appointments to the two budget positions:
