Congresswoman Chellie Pingree Elected to Leadership of Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has been elected by her peers to leadership of the House's Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC). The Coalition is made up of Members of Congress committed to environmental issues. As vice-chair, Pingree will oversee membership for the caucus.

"I'm proud to be a member of SEEC and I look forward to getting more of my colleagues engaged in our work," said Pingree. "The caucus offers critical leadership for holding polluters accountable and setting a sustainable vision for the future. These issues are especially important for Maine, which places a high premium on our natural resources and is becoming a leader in renewable energy and the green economy."

Pingree is a founding member of the caucus. Since its start in 2008, it has helped craft and pass several pieces of important legislation, including:
· Investments for green job training, renewable energy, clean transportation alternatives, and energy efficiency;
· Ending tax subsidies for heavy-polluting energy manufacturers;
· Holding BP and Big Oil accountable for the Gulf Oil Spill, and fighting for stronger regulations and improved oil spill response strategies.

"Big Oil and industry polluters have become too influential in American politics, so it's critical that we have a group dedicated to fighting for a cleaner future for our children," said Pingree. "This group has accomplished a lot in a short time, and we have no intention of slowing down or letting up over the next two years."
