President Obama signs Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal

Press Release

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree watched this morning as President Obama signed a bill ending a ban on openly gay men and women serving in the military.

"This day is both historic and long overdue," Pingree said. "The end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell will mean that the gay men and women who want to serve our country don't have to compromise their honesty and integrity."

Pingree praised those who helped finally bring an end to the 17-year-old policy.

"Getting this repeal through the House and Senate took steady and strong leadership from many individuals, including President Obama, Admiral Mullen and Senator Collins," Pingree said.

In the House, Pingree led the debate on the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell when it passed last week.
