Congresswoman Chellie Pingree Votes Against Tax Cuts for Wealthiest Americans

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree voted against a proposal that passed the House tonight that will give tax breaks to the wealthiest taxpayers.

"I've voted for a tax break for the first $250,000 of income for all Americans, for an extension of unemployment benefits to provide a real boost to the economy and for tax breaks that help our small businesses grow," Pingree said. "But I can't support tax breaks for the rich that add nearly $1 trillion to the deficit."

Pingree previously voted for a tax break for the first $250,000 of income for all Americans, as well as extension of unemployment benefits and reform of the estate tax, but she said tonight she opposed additional tax breaks that would only benefit the richest taxpayers and small businesses.

"Congress lost track of their priorities," Pingree said. "Instead of tax relief for working Americans and an extension of unemployment benefits for those still struggling to find work, the focus was on giving tax break to the rich."

Pingree said over 500 Maine people have contacted her in the last week on proposed tax cut proposal, and almost all of them urged her to oppose additional tax breaks for the rich.
