Cornyn Statement on Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Statement

Following the testimonies of several senior U.S. military officers, including Gen. James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. George W. Casey, Chief of Staff of the Army, and Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and the conclusion of the Senate Armed Services Committee hearings on the proposed repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) issued the following statement:

"I am deeply concerned over the proposed repeal of the so-called "Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy. This morning, three of the four military service chiefs expressed clear reservations with repealing the policy at the present time. I believe it would be a profound mistake to disregard the informed opinion of these military leaders.

"The readiness of our Armed Forces must always be the foremost consideration in setting military personnel policy, especially while our troops are serving in harm's way, actively engaged in carrying out the Global War on Terror. Now is not the time to increase the level of stress on our force through such a dramatic policy change. To that end, I will oppose the attempt to repeal the DADT policy."
