Today, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R.W.Va., voted in favor of S. 3307, The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Breaking with her party, Capito stands committed to ensuring West Virginia children have access to healthy, nutritious meals.
"Many West Virginia children rely on the federally-funded school lunch program; for some, this is the only healthy meal they will eat for the entire day. The provisions in this bill will ensure that all children who qualify for assistance will receive it, and it will set standards to guarantee meals meet minimum nutrition requirements. I am also pleased to see that the bill authorizes grants to find ways to curb the childhood obesity in America. We owe it to our kids as parents, teachers and lawmakers, to make sure schools have the necessary resources to promote healthy living and fight this rampant epidemic," stated Capito.
Of note, in September, Capito was a special guest on MSNBC's Morning Joe. The show, which regularly airs from New York, traveled to Washington to promote healthy lifestyles and activity as part of their "Bipartisan Healthcare Challenge."
Introduced by Senator Blanche Lincoln, D. Ar., the S. 3307 would make all foster children automatically eligible for the National School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program, would expand eligibility to any school where at least 50 percent of the children are eligible for free or reduced price meals, and require the USDA Secretary, in conjunction with the Secretary of HHSs, to do a national study on the nutritional quality of foods provided in child care settings, among other things.
