December 2010 E-News - Second Amendment Rights

Statement

Date: Dec. 1, 2010
Issues: Guns

Recently, the Department of State banned the sale of surplus M1 Carbine and Garand rifles from South Korea to qualified buyers in the U.S. These firearms, known as "relics' or "curios,' are immensely popular in the United States and sought after by antique firearms collectors and recreationists alike. Many were shocked and outraged by the Department of State's decision, including myself and many of my congressional colleagues. As a result, I worked with seventeen other Senators in sending a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in early October, requesting that the ban be reversed. Shortly thereafter, I worked with that same group of colleagues to introduce bipartisan legislation that would do the same, clarifying that firearms more than 50 years old and considered relics or curios can be re-imported and sold to law-abiding Americans. I will work closely with my colleagues to ensure that this unfortunate decision by the State Department is overturned, whether it be administratively or through passage of this legislation.
