Hoyer Elected House Minority Whip

Statement

Date: Nov. 17, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

"I am deeply honored that my colleagues have elected me Minority Whip for the next Congress. I look forward to working with Members on both sides of the aisle to create jobs and foster long-term economic growth here in Maryland and throughout our Nation.

"Democrats will continue to put forward a positive agenda on jobs, including continued action on the Make It In America agenda, a plan to create jobs and revitalize our manufacturing industry. Second, we will focus on building a solid foundation for our middle class and ensuring economic growth in the long term. Third, Maryland families -- as well as millions across the country -- are correctly concerned about our long-term fiscal future, so I will push leaders in Washington to make the hard choices it requires to return our country to the fiscal balance. Finally, I will also use my seat at the leadership table to fight for the priorities and values of hard-working Maryland families.

"We have a challenging two years ahead. Democrats and Republicans must work together to help solve the complex problems facing our Nation. We must put forward a strong job-creation agenda, focus on the future of the middle class, and show our seriousness about fiscal discipline. As Minority Whip, I look forward to meeting these challenges head on."
