Making Everyday Veterans Day

Statement

Every year we pause to remember the sacrifices that our nation's veterans have made for their country and fellow Americans. We owe these brave men and women an immeasurable debt. That's why, as a Member of Congress, I strive to mark this occasion at home by participating in our annual Veteran's Day parade in downtown San Jose sponsored by the United Veterans Council and other veteran's groups.

Over the past year, the House of Representatives has worked to improve the lives of America's nearly 24 million veterans. We have increased the investment in veterans' health care and services by 70 percent since January 2007 -- including the largest single increase in the 78-year history of the VA. We've continued building on that foundation and this year we've:

* Increased social workers and mental health providers for veterans and their family members and updated services and housing for veterans to prevent homelessness;

* Simplified the process for veterans seeking benefits and treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder;

* Ensured that veterans and their families under age 65 receive the minimum benefit standard that is mandated in the health care reform legislation.

* Required full transparency and disclosure of the life insurance policies and requirements of our veterans.

I am proud to stand up for veterans and will continue to fight for their rights and honor them for their service to our country. Please join me in celebrating their service and ensuring that no soldier or veteran is left behind.
