Dedicated Funding Constitutional Amendment
Senator Sieben supported the legislation that gave Minnesotans the opportunity to invest in the things they love the most about their state: lakes and rivers, outdoor resources, and cultural amenities. Voter approval of the amendment ensured that the commitment to these priorities will exist for the next 25 years. This stable funding is especially important during the current economic downturn and state budget constraints.
Senator Sieben worked with community members to successfully secure a portion of this funding for coordination with Wisconsin and the National Park Service on comprehensive water monitoring and phosphorous reduction activities in the Lake St. Croix portion of the St. Croix River. The St. Croix River was recently placed on the "America's 10 most threatened" list by the national river advocacy group, American Rivers, further proof that now, more than ever, is the time to increase efforts in monitoring and treatment programs that are already underway.
Renewable Energy Standard
Senator Sieben was a strong supporter of the Renewable Energy Standard legislation. Under this standard, energy utilities will be required to produce 25% of their energy mix from renewable sources by 2025. Xcel Energy, which provides half of the electricity for the state, will have a slightly higher standard of 30% renewable energy by 2020. The implementation of this standard is a positive step forward for the environment and the economy. The production of renewable energy will create many new, good-paying jobs while dramatically reducing carbon emissions in Minnesota.
