Just four short years ago, the State of Minnesota had a $2.2 billion budget surplus, which has turned into an estimated $6 billion deficit. That is a difference of over $8 billion. Enough is enough; we must reduce wasteful government spending.
How we deal with this deficit comes down to simple kitchen table budgeting. Minnesota's families must control spending and live within their means, and our government should do the same. At some point, most families have gathered around their kitchen table to review bank statements and have been forced to make difficult decisions about needs vs. wants. Our state legislators have a responsibility to do the same. We simply can't spend more money than revenues coming in. As your next state senator, I will encourage legislators and constituents to work together and think creatively to reduce areas of wasteful spending so we can save now and invest more in our future. Also, pubic servants must consider combining services and resources while working in a collaborative manner with other branches of government that share similar duties.
I am committed to making our government smaller and more efficient. Larger government is not the answer. Better government is the solution.
