House Democrats End Session Without Passing A Budget, Extending Tax Relief

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R.W.Va., released the following statement on the early adjournment of the House:

"Leaving Congress for the year without passing a budget, without extending tax relief, without putting a stop-gap on taxpayer-funded bailouts and without a clear agenda on how to boost the economy demonstrates lack of leadership and an unwillingness to put politics aside. The American people can't simply call it quits when a situation becomes uneasy; we owe it to our constituents to give them the clarity and certainty they want, need and deserve.

"Perhaps the biggest point of contention is the Democrats' refusal to extend tax relief to middle class families and small businesses. Congress will adjourn without extending tax cuts at a time of near double digit unemployment and a sluggish private sector. Our nation's job creators are once again kept in the dark about the future of their tax rates, making it difficult to make plans for the future. Without Congressional action, roughly half of all small business income in America will face a higher tax rate.

"We'll also leave without addressing our unsustainable national debt and deficit despite Republican proposals to save the taxpayers over $155 billion through the YouCut program. Millions of Americans are finding ways to cut back, yet the Democrats continue to spend tax dollars with nothing to show for it.

"I am disappointed in the Democratic leadership for turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to the concerns of the American people."
