Capito Responds To Latest Unemployment Numbers
Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R.W.Va., released the following statement in response to the latest unemployment numbers published today by the Department of Labor.
The latest report shows that unemployment remains stagnant at 9.6 percent and the economy lost 95,000 jobs in September. The jobless rate has equaled or exceeded 9.5 percent for 14 consecutive months.
"It's been over a year and a half since the President signed the $862 billion stimulus package into law, yet unemployment continues to hover near double digits and the private sector remains sluggish. We cannot continue to pass massive spending bills without the slightest idea of how to pay for them. Small businesses, our nation's job creators, cannot make plans to hire or expand when they're faced with uncertainty about their tax rates and burdensome regulations like the 1099 filing requirement included in the healthcare bill.
"Every day that Washington continues this back-and-forth bickering is another day that our economy struggles with more uncertainty. We owe it to our constituents, many of whom have been unable to find jobs for months, to seek common sense ways to right the economy without breaking the bank.
"Washington needs to get out of the way and allow our small businesses to do what they do best--create jobs."
