Issue Position: Reform

Issue Position

Reforming Washington

Washington is broken. We need to change the way Congress does business.

Pay Raise

I voted against a congressional pay raise and introduced legislation to block congressional pay raises until Congress balances the budget. Congress doesn't deserve a pay raise until it shows the fiscal discipline necessary to balance the budget and reduce the debt.

Earmark Ban

Congressional earmarks account for roughly $20 billion in annual spending and have become a symbol of why Washington is broken. I have supported a ban on earmarks to reduce spending, balance the budget, and restore the confidence of the American people in government.

Open Negotiations

We need to end secret, backroom deals in Congress. I introduced a House resolution demanding that the health care reform bill be conducted in the open under the watchful eye of the American people.

Sunshine Bill

I introduced, along with Congressman Ron Paul, "The Sunshine Bill." This legislation would give the public at least three days to review and debate legislation before the bill can be brought to the floor for a vote.

Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009

I cosponsored legislation authored by Ron Paul increase oversight and achieve much-needed transparency of the Federal Reserve. The bill would eliminate restrictions on GAO audits and open Fed operations to enhanced security.

Lobbying reform

I helped change house rules to prevent lobbyists from buying House members lunch and limit the ability of lawmakers to take privately funded trips. I also helped pass legislation to increase disclosure requirements and transparency.

Denying Pensions to Congressional Felons

I voted to prevent members of congress who violate the public trust by committing a felony related to their official duties from receiving their federal pension. Any member of congress who violates the public trust by committing a felony should lose their government pensions.
