Fort Gordon Wins Planning Funds for New Law Enforcement Complex
Washington, DC - U.S. Representatives Charlie Norwood (GA-09) and Max Burns (GA-12) today hailed news that legislation marked-up by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Military Construction earlier this week included $310,000 in planning funds towards development of a Law Enforcement Complex at Fort Gordon.
"Given the budgetary constraints and extremely competitive nature of military construction funding on Capitol Hill these days, this is particularly good news for Fort Gordon and all of us who depend on it at just the right time," said Norwood. "Make no mistake, we still have an awfully long road ahead to make construction of this much needed facility a reality. However, having our requests answered by including the planning funds in this important measure is a very good first step."
Congressmen Norwood and Burns have requested funding for construction of a Law Enforcement Complex at Fort Gordon to house the installation's Directorate of Public Safety and the Military Police Battalion Headquarters.
While the projected cost for completion of this project is estimated to be $6.4 million, the inclusion of $310,000 for its planning in the Military Construction Subcommittee's bill is viewed as a very good and strong signal towards the Fort's future development and growth. Prior to this measure, both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees also passed Defense Authorization measures that include $310,000 for planning of the facility at Fort Gordon.
"These planning funds are a real win for the future of Ft. Gordon," says Burns. "New infrastructure investment, even in the planning stage, sends a powerful message that this installation is one that will not just survive the base realignment process, but will grow and win new missions. Coming on the heels of similar investment wins for Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, and the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, we're building a solid case for East Georgia to remain a leading regional center for our nation's military in the future."
