Andy Harris today released a statement celebrating Constitution Day.
"On September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia, 37 delegates signed a new constitution on which a nation was built," said Harris. "They gave us a constitution that limited the power of government and ensured the rights of individuals. Today, we celebrate the brilliance of the authors.
"Jefferson best expressed their intent... 'In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.'
"Unlike any other constitution in history, the American Constitution was designed to protect citizens from the government by strictly enumerating what the government could do. Powers not expressly given to the federal government were reserved to the states and the people.
"In recent years our Constitution has been treated as irrelevant. As a member of Congress, I will consider every proposal for its constitutional legitimacy and return appropriate powers to the states and to the people. I pledge to make legislative decisions ensuring all our constitutional rights are fully protected."
