Statement of Senator Patty Murray on Selection of Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee John Edwards

"John Edwards is a great choice for John Kerry, for Washington state and for America. He is both a good friend and an effective advocate for his state and the nation. When John joined me in Seattle in April, his optimistic message energized Washington state and his enthusiasm will certainly galvanize support to move America in a new direction this November.

John Edwards has been a leader on the issues Americans care about most, including improving our homeland security, creating jobs, stemming the rising costs of health care, preserving our environment and expanding economic opportunity for all of America's families. It has been a pleasure to work with him on legislation to protect our seaports, fully fund the No Child Left Behind Act, and improve health care for our nation's veterans.

Senator Edwards has dedicated his life to giving a voice to those who are unable to speak for themselves, passionately advocating for those in need. In 2002, he worked with me to cosponsor legislation to improve health care for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and he has been a consistent voice to protect women's health care choices.
