John Stephen, Republican nominee for Governor, offered the following statement in response to the passing of former State Senator Carl Johnson. Johnson, who served in both the State Senate and State House of Representatives, passed away Saturday.
"Carl Johnson was an outstanding senator but, more importantly, an outstanding man who always emphasized family and community," Stephen said. "His commitment to Meredith, the Lakes Region and Grafton County is clearly demonstrated by his numerous charitable activities that he remained committed to supporting even recently."
"That only tells part of the tremendous story about this great man," Stephen added. "He had an extraordinary background, from pitching for the Boston Braves organization, to his service with the Coast Guard during World War II, to being a local businessman. However, he was, first and foremost, a family man, committed to Jeannette, his children and grandchildren. This is a huge loss for our state. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and many people he has touched through the years."
