After seeing young Iowans and parents faced with the sticker shock of a higher education, Chuck Grassley began asking certain colleges and universities about their providing young people with an affordable education in line with the tax-exempt status each enjoys. His inquiry prompted many of them to re-examine their endowment policies which led to thousands of young people finding lower tuition bills.
When The N'West Iowa Review learned of Grassley's efforts to expose the policies of many college endowments, it editorialized, "It's important to remember schools in your long-term giving plans. But it's also important for schools to use the money in a reasonable period of time. Good for Grassley for shedding light on this issue."
Grassley is concerned that, despite the rich tax breaks used by colleges and universities, the schools aren't doing enough to contain costs and keep raising tuition.
Grassley understands the difficulty families face when financing education dreams. Grassley is championing initiatives that expand tax-free college savings accounts for parents and family members, remove the 60-payment limit for deducting student loan interest and increase the income limits, and extend the first-ever tax deduction for college tuition.
