Idaho has had a prominent role in energy research and development for many years. The Idaho National Laboratory generated the world's first electricity from nuclear energy and continues to be a strong leader in nuclear energy as well as alternative energy research and development.
Our economy and way of life depend on reliable, affordable energy sources. It is vital that our energy is diversified, and that we do not rely solely on fossil fuels. We must recognize that hydropower, nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal and other renewable and alternative energies are an important part of today's energy resources. Conservation is also a vital part of any national energy policy.
I have supported and will continue to support the growth of America's nuclear power industry. Nuclear power is a safe, clean and reliable source of energy. We must work together to overcome the regulatory challenges to begin building more nuclear power facilities not only in Idaho, but throughout the United States.
While in Congress, I have consistently pursued opportunities to promote a national energy policy to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources. Reducing fossil fuel dependence reveals the United States' commitment to national security, affordable energy and a healthier environment. Additionally, I am proud to be part of an effort to increase awareness of the various forms of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies as a member of the Senate Renewables and Energy Efficiency Caucus.
I was honored to receive the Legislative Award from the American Council of Renewable Energy for my support of renewable energy research in Idaho and in America and the Independent Oil and Natural Gas Award for my work to maintain and enhance America's domestic oil and natural gas reserves.
