Statement of the Hon. Rosa DeLauro on New Proposed Overtime Changes

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) today released the following statement in response to the Bush Administration's proposed rules changing overtime pay. The changes would erode the 40-hour work week and take away overtime pay for workers making as little as $23,660 a year.

"I am deeply disappointed that the Bush Administration has continued its assault on working families by moving forward with rules that take away workers' overtime rights. Earlier this year, both the House and Senate fought to protect overtime protections for workers, and the Bush Administration ignored Congress, and the more than 75,000 public comments the Department of Labor received and proposed changing the rules. Many families depend on overtime pay as a part of their income, and these rules will not only take that critical money away, but could take away employees' rights to control the compensatory time they get instead. These rules will cause an erosion of the 40-hour work week and are just another example of how out of touch the Bush Administration is with the American worker."
