Oliverio marks anniversary of women's right to vote with college registration drives

Congressional candidate Mike Oliverio today announced that he is sponsoring a voter registration effort tomorrow -- Thursday, August 26 - at West Virginia and Fairmont State universities. The events are planned in honor of the 90th anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, a declaration that granted United States women the right to vote.

"This event marks the anniversary of our country's passage of women's right to vote," Oliverio said. "I think it is appropriate that we honor such an important and historic day by leading a drive to register young voters. Our staff will especially emphasize registering female voters."

A booth will be set up at Fairmont State University in the Falcon Center, adjacent to Barnes and Noble bookstore, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At West Virginia University, volunteers will be walking on campus, offering students the opportunity to register.

"There are few freedoms as sacred as a person's right to vote," Oliverio said. "We would like to not only encourage our students to vote, we would like to see them as active as possible in the political process in our state."

Oliverio, a state senator from Morgantown, is the Democratic Party nominee for Northern West Virginia's congressional seat. He faces Republican David McKinley in the November General Election.

By contrast, McKinley will be holding a fundraiser headlined by Pete Sessions of Texas, who famously held a 2007 campaign reception for himself at a burlesque club in Las Vegas, the Forty Deuce. Sessions, who is also listed among the most corrupt members of Congress by the non-partisan Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

Oliverio campaign manager Curtis Wilkerson said, "While David McKinley hosts fundraisers headlined by a man who holds his fundraisers in a Las Vegas burlesque house, where people use women as objects, Mike Oliverio is campaigning to encourage young women to vote.

"It's quite a contrast."
