House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after the Senate blocked passage on the DISCLOSE Act, legislation to ensure transparency in the electoral process, preventing corporations and special interests from secretly spending unlimited amounts of money to influence elections.
"Today, Senate Republicans continued with their obstructionist agenda, siding with corporations and special interests over transparency and accountability in U.S. elections by blocking the DISCLOSE Act. The bill requires that corporations and special interest groups be held accountable in the same way political candidates are, making them stand by their ads and provide information about funding sources. This bill also prevents large government contractors and TARP recipients from spending taxpayer money on elections and ensures that the electoral process is free from the influence of foreign companies and hostile governments. Unfortunately, Republicans have shown once again that they will side with special interests over the best interest of the American people."
