Secretary of State and 4th Congressional District Candidate Todd Rokita's Statement Regarding the Passage of Congress' $26 Billion Federal Spending Bill

Today, Todd Rokita issued the following statement regarding Congress' passing of the $26 billion state bailout bill:

"Yesterday Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Congress passed a $26 billion spending bill aimed out bailing out states that operate beyond their means. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill will add $12.6 billion to the already out of control national debt. It is more government spending and debt that will have to be paid for by our children and grandchildren for years to come, limiting their prosperity.

"This bailout is also particularly unfair to Hoosier taxpayers. While states across the country are suffering the consequences of failed leadership with mounting debt and increasing budget deficits, Indiana has remained solvent and avoided debt by making tough budget decisions. I run Indiana's Secretary of State Office on a budget that is the same dollar amount it was in 1987, and this year we returned 11.2% of that budget back to Indiana's General Fund in an effort to keep Indiana solvent.

"Tough decisions, real leadership and treating our fellow Americans like adults instead of pandering to their worst fears are what have served Indiana so well recently and what will lead America back to economic prosperity. It's the kind of leadership I will take to Washington D.C."
