Afghanistan Update
This weekend on Meet the Press, General David Petraeus gave an exclusive interview from Afghanistan to discuss measures of success in Afghanistan and the need to show sustained progress. If you missed the interview, it can be viewed here.
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I just recently returned from spending several days in Afghanistan. The visit to Kabul and Kandahar included meeting General Petraeus, visiting troops and personnel from South Carolina, and talking with Afghan police officers.
Throughout the trip, I checked in with the Island Packet's military reporter, Patrick Donohue who brought the story to Lowcountry residents:

During these visits, I tend to view things from a couple different perspectives: first through the eyes of a father who has four sons in the military and also as the Ranking Member of the Military Personnel Subcommittee. While the Taliban and Al-Qaeda continue to threaten the stability of this region, I believe General Petraeus is the military commander who can best implement a sound and realistic strategy to enable the Afghan people to defend their country and root out the terrorists who continue to make threats against our homeland.
F-35B and Beaufort
I have been working very closely with Senator Lindsey Graham to push for Beaufort as the future home to F-35B squadrons. Beaufort's pro-military community, mild climate, and existing facilities make it an ideal spot for F-35B Squadrons. I thank Senator Graham for his efforts to highlight Beaufort's benefits for the military, as well as the quality of life for its soldiers and families. I look forward to expanding the "Sound of Freedom' in the Lowcountry and welcome the jobs and community excitement that will surely follow the decision.
