Schumer: Pool Party Concert on Augsut 29th Will Go on as Scheduled; Senator Helps Broker Deal Between Jelly NYC and the Open Space Alliance to Save Show from Cancellation

Today, United States Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that an agreement has been reached between the Open Space Alliance and concert promoter JELLY NYC to ensure that the previously cancelled August 29 concert in East River State Park will go on as scheduled.

Earlier this week, a dispute between JELLY NYC and the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn led to the cancellation of the eighth and final show of this summer's concert series. That would have brought an abrupt end to the JELLY Pool Parties, a very successful free summer concert series that was started in 2006. But beginning this past Tuesday, Schumer--who stepped in last winter to get the concert series renewed for this summer--intervened again to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table. After three days of discussions, JELLY NYC today made the necessary payments to OSA, allowing the August 29th show to be restored.

Senator Schumer said: "It feels like summer in Brooklyn just got extended by an extra week. We've been working nonstop to try to restore the August 29th show because we didn't want to see a good thing like the JELLY Pool Parties end prematurely. I am glad both sides finally came together because these concerts mean so much to the neighborhood of Williamsburg and the people of Brooklyn. The ultimate beneficiary from these shows is the New York city economy because it is cultural magnets like this that make young people from around the country want to live here. I'd like to thank OSA, NYS Parks, Assemblyman Lentol, the area developers and JELLY NYC for ensuring this summer's concert series ends on a high note."

The pool parties have become the biggest summer concert series to hit New York City in decades. They were originally held at the McCarren Park Pool but were moved last year to the East River State Park due to construction. Within just a few years, the concert series experienced a huge jump in popularity, with audience traveling from across the country, and even the world, to attend the concerts.

The concerts almost did not return for 2010 at all. But last winter, Schumer intervened to lead the fight to save the JELLY Pool Parties. He met with the Open Space Alliance, and local elected officials to work on a deal to ensure the Pool Parties returned to the East River State Park.

The seventh Pool Party of 2010 is scheduled for today. It would have been the final concert if the August 29th event had remained cancelled.
