$26 Billion State Bailout Rewards Reckless Spending, Sets Dangerous Precedent

Today, U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) released the following statement regarding congressional passage of H.R. 1586, a bill that will increase taxes on American job creators and add to America's already exploding deficit:

"With all of the bailouts, stimulus packages and government takeovers, America is long past broke. Yet this $26 billion bailout package takes money from people in Wyoming and other states who have tightened their belts to foot the bill for unions in states that have failed to budget. H.R. 1586 sets the stage for never-ending federal bailouts of states that cannot get a handle on their spending by a federal government that cannot meet its own financial obligations.

"Democrats are relying on budget gimmicks to convince the American people that this bill is deficit neutral. The truth is that H.R. 1586 spends the entire $26 billion in just two years, while the "offsets' take place over ten years.

"Wyoming balances it budget; our legislators have made the tough choices necessary to make ends meet. California, New York and other spendy states must learn to do the same."
