Blog: Federal Abortion Funding Must Stop

Statement

President Obama did not uphold his deal to keep federal dollars from funding abortions as he promised. This week the Department of Health and Human Services announced its giving the state of Pennsylvania $160 million to set up new high-risk insurance pools. These are going to cover any legal abortions within the state. This is in complete contradiction to an executive order the President issued to ban the taxpayer-funding of abortions. This funding points out the inability of the President's executive order to save the lives of those who cannot protect themselves. As a strong believer in the value and dignity of human life, I am not only opposed to all abortions, but am strongly against any abortions being funded by federal dollars.

The health care law, which was signed by President Obama earlier this year, created a program to give $5 billion to operate these high-risk insurance pools to provide Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans in each state to those who have been previously denied insurance for having a pre-existing condition. The $5 billion from the federal government provided for this Act is to help offset the large cost of providing those with pre-existing conditions with healthcare. However, some of these programs will be administered by the states and, regardless of the administrator, might include elective abortion in a few of the state's plans.

It is our responsibility to protect and save unborn children and the future generations to lead our nation. I am a proud co-sponsor of the "Protect Life Act" to amend the healthcare bill to prevent federal funding for abortions. Protecting these future generations and their lives is one of the most important roles I can play in my Congressional position. I will continue to be an outspoken advocate and passionate supporter for the Pro-Life majority, and work to forbid federal dollars from funding abortions of any kind.
