HEADLINE: Democrats are Fighting to Protect the Environment On Earth Day and Every Day of the Year
DATELINE: WASHINGTON, April 22
BODY:
House and Senate Democrats pledged to continue fighting to protect the environment and safeguard the future for our children at an Earth Day press conference today.
Representatives Hilda Solis (D-CA), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Edward Markey (D-MA), and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) joined Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Jim Jeffords (I-VT), and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and environmental organizations at the press conference and called on the Bush Administration to stop its attack on the environment.
"Quietly and quickly, the Administration is rolling back over 30 years of bipartisan progress on the environment," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said. "Under the Bush Administration there is nothing to celebrate on the 34th Earth Day. When it comes to the environment, special interests trump the public interest every time for the Bush Administration. The Administration is undermining the Clean Air and Water Acts, abandoning the polluter pays principle in Superfund, and trying to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling."
