Issue Position

I believe that an educated public as more important than Public Education. The end goal should be functioning citizens who can read, write, do real math, understand and apply the time-tested principles of physical sciences, and make life long plans to take care of themselves and their off spring.

In order to make that happen, children need honest information and the opportunity to ask questions, honest testing of their mastery of the skills, and the realization that having correct answers for non-negotiables is crucial (i.e., the proper spelling of "cat," and the square root of 9).

Parents and the decision makers at the local level must have the latitude to do whatever it takes to give their children the best chance at success in this life as an outcome of their education.

As your Congressman, I will work to decentralize the decision-making process for educating our children. Federal dollars can be replaced by local dollars, which will be more responsibly spent. Remember, billions of dollars leave the state every year to go to Washington and points beyond. Dollars that are put on the national credit card must be repaid. If you don't think they'll have to be repaid, ask your college graduate what the chances are of not paying those monstrous student loans back.

Until we can make education completely a state matter, I will work to reduce the mandates that go along with the funding.

I will always stand by a parental choice regarding the best way to educate their children. We really all do want the best for the kids. But, I would rather take the chance that one set of parents makes a poor choice than remove the freedom from millions of families.
