Issue Position

There is no doubt that we are all intertwined. There are two ways to approach "the economy." You can have master planners who make decisions and watch the statistics that measure and indicate how the pieces are doing in this big machine called the economy. You can also look at it with the perspective that in order for the big economy to be healthy, you need to have 300 million individual economies able to sustain themselves. I see the individual economies as the most important.

In order for me to live in that perspective I have to be willing to let people do what they do best in order to take care of their own families. Government's role in the economy is:

* Provide a fair and predictable justice system that allows for profitable trade between citizens. Contracts are binding;
* Local law enforcement should prevent people from stealing or damaging someone else's stuff;
* Government should never compete with the private sector when the private sector can do the job.

It is not government's job to deter business practices by taxing or to create incentive by subsidizing. The federal government's role should be to stand back and let the citizens take care of their needs. So much wealth has been siphoned out of our production that we have become poor. A wealthy nation consists of many prosperous people.
