Brett is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he earned a bronze star for his service. Today, Brett continues to serve as a JAG officer in the Tennessee National Guard, and he knows first-hand the importance of having a strong defense and the benefits of taking care of soldiers and their families.

In Congress, Brett would be one of only a few veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and his voice on National Defense would be guided from his experience of being on the front lines and serving with so many dedicated patriots.

Stability of the Middle East is vital to our National Security, so as we continue the draw-down of troops, we must continue to support our Coalition partners and not forsake their sacrifice or the sacrifice of our service members. As we plan for future defense, we must strengthen our intelligence community at home while also continuing to strengthen relationships in the international community.

As a component of National Security, we must also enforce immigration laws that are on the books. Otherwise, we make a mockery of those who follow the steps to become legal citizens of the United States. As we enforce these laws, we need to improve the coordination between local, state, and federal officials to make sure there is a coordinated effort to address illegal immigration thoughtfully.

An additional component of National Security is the continuation of efforts to seek alternative energy sources. Incentives need to be enacted to encourage the private sector to focus on research and development in green technologies that will lessen our dependence on foreign oil. This policy must prove unwavering in the face of manipulation of the pricing of foreign oil. We need to plan now and to set goals that reduce dependence on fossil fuels for the benefit of future generations.
