Congress Extends Benefits for Long-time Unemployed Americans

Yesterday, July 22, the House of Representatives passed legislation to extend basic unemployment benefits that have been denied to millions of long-term unemployed Americans. The extension of benefits legislation passed with the support of 241 Democrats and 31 Republicans. It was immediately signed into law by President Obama.

Congresswoman McCollum voted to support the extension of unemployment insurance after months of delays and political game playing by Senate Republicans. Congresswoman McCollum commented, "While Americans search for jobs, unemployment benefits keep families from hardship and in some cases falling into absolute poverty. This safety net isn't designed to replace a steady paycheck but rather keep families afloat. Extending unemployment not only helps people out of work it will also stimulate the economy - an opportunity Congress can't afford to lose."
