Immigration Reform

Statement

Also recently President Obama delivered a high-profile speech on the pressing need to reform our nation's broken immigration system. I am often reminded by constituents that, during his 2008 campaign, Obama promised the American people that he would make immigration reform a priority during his first year in office. Unfortunately, eighteen months into his presidency, he continues to deliver words but no action.

I have long been a supporter of credible, comprehensive immigration reform, and I have told President Obama that I am committed to actively engaging in bipartisan efforts toward that goal. But unfortunately the Administration has made suing Arizona--rather than securing our border--its priority as the Department of Justice announced this week it is filing a lawsuit seeking to overturn Arizona's own immigration reform law, which has yet to even take effect. I'm disappointed the President has yet to step forward and truly lead on immigration reform -- not just deliver speeches. It is the responsibility of the federal government to secure our borders and enforce our immigration laws. Comprehensive immigration reform should be more than an election-year talking point, and any chance we have at passing it begins and ends with Presidential leadership.
